Guide to Greece!
Greece, the land of ancient history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality, is a dream destination for many. Nestled at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, it offers a rich cultural heritage combined with modern conveniences, making it a unique place to live, work, or retire.
But it’s not just the scenery that captivates—Greece’s vibrant culture and relaxed lifestyle make it an ideal place to embrace life’s simple pleasures. The locals, known for their "filoxenia" (hospitality), welcome newcomers with open arms, making it easier for foreigners to feel at home.
Cost of life
"Living in Greece sounds great, but is it expensive?"
Rent
Finding a place to rent in Greece is infinitely easier than in other European countries such as Germany, Austria, Czechia, Spain etc. According to feedback from our candidates and our own experience one can find a room/appartment in less than a week's time in most cases!
Depending on the city and the neighborhood, the average starting price for a 30 sq.m. one-bedroom apartment can range from as little as €200 in less central neighborhoods outside of Athens to €500 in central locations of Athens or on specific islands.
The deposit is usually 1-2 month rents.

Healthcare
EU citizens moving to Greece for the first time have access to Greece's public healthcare system (ESY). In order to enjoy the full benefits of the public healthcare system in Greece you will need to get an AMKA.
Steps to obtain an AMKA:
- Visit a KEP Office (Citizen Service Center):
- Locate the nearest KEP office in your area.
- Documents Required:
- Passport or National ID card (for proof of identity).
- EU residence certificate or proof of address in Greece.
- Proof of employment or registration for social security contributions (if applicable).
- Processing Time:
- AMKA is typically issued on the spot or within a few days.
Once you have an AMKA, your employer or the social security office (EFKA) registers you for public insurance.
Public insurance is funded through payroll deductions (for employees) or voluntary contributions (for self-employed individuals).
Contributions cover access to doctors, hospitals, and basic medical services.
Our client in Greece undertakes the issuance of your AMKA!
Employee Contributions: If you are employed in Greece, social security contributions (EFKA) are automatically deducted from your salary. These contributions cover health insurance, pensions, unemployment, and other social services.
- Contribution rate: Around 16%–18% of your salary.
Useful contacts: - KEP Offices: For assistance with AMKA and general guidance.
- EFKA (Social Insurance Fund): For questions about public insurance registration.
- IKA (Public Health Clinics): Local clinics where insured residents can access services.
Taxes
Greece uses a progressive tax system for individuals. The rates are as follows:
- Up to €10,000: 9%
- €10,001 to €20,000: 22%
- €20,001 to €30,000: 28%
- €30,001 to €40,000: 36%
- Over €40,000: 44%
Greece has signed taxation agreements with many countries to prevent taxing the same income twice.
If you are an EU citizen, you will likely be covered by one of these treaties. This means that if you pay taxes in another EU country, you may be able to offset your tax liability in Greece or claim a credit for taxes paid abroad.
Tax Returns: Taxpayers must file an annual income tax return (E1 form) by June 30th of the following year.
Online Filing: Tax returns can be filed online through the TAXISnet platform, which is the Greek tax authority’s electronic filing system.
Our client in Greece undertakes the issuance of your TAX ID number!
We highly recommend contacting a tax advisor in Greece in order to make sure that you are compliant with the tax regulations of Greece and those of your home country. The normal cost for a tax advisor to file your tax returns is around €30.
